We are a small voluntary group that runs events and activities to get people talking about climate change. These include “Barstool” events, which we run in public places, such as shopping centres and sports venues, where we ask members of the public what they think and feel about climate change. Talking about climate change raises awareness, helps with climate anxiety and can lead to action, whether this is lifestyle changes or pressuring politicians to prioritise this issue.
We are also available to give talks or workshops for community or activist groups on having successful climate communications (see our "Contact" page). As we are completely self-funding, we ask for a donation for these workshops, depending on your means. CCS is completely independent and non-political, and all funds raised are used to support our climate communications work. Our story Spring 2015: Carbon Neutral University (CNU) is formed to promote stronger carbon emissions targets for University of Sheffield. The society is for staff, students and members of the public, and is instrumental in pushing the university to publish its first Sustainability Strategy in 2020. November 2017: CNU invites George Marshall from Climate Outreach to give a workshop on Climate Communications. Many activists come away inspired to communicate more effectively about climate change with their friends, family and others outside their “green bubble”. January 2018: Kathy and fellow CNU member Nick Nuttgens set up the ‘Climate Communications Hub’ as a supportive space for people to explore climate communications projects both big and small and develop the best way to have conversations with others. Lauren Jones joins Kathy and Nick in running the group. They hold regular workshops and meetings between 2018 and 2020, often with outside speakers or facilitators from other climate groups such as Hope for the Future and Climate Interactive. May 2018 Lauren and Kathy set up the Barstool Project, inspired by a similar project in Dublin from George Marshall’s workshop back in November 2017. “Barstool” events are held in public places. such as shopping centres and sports venues, where we ask members of the public what they think and feel about climate change. April 2023 After the sad passing of Nick Nuttgens on January 6th, Lauren and Kathy relaunch the Hub as Climate Communications Sheffield. |
